There are about 25-30 first magnitude springs in the State of Florida, depending on what source you trust. The “magnitude” of a spring refers to its discharge, measured in cubic feet of water per second. A first magnitude spring discharges 64 million gallons of water a day, or more. A second magnitude spring goes down by an order of magnitude – discharging from 6.4 million gallons of water up to 63.99 million gallons daily.

Florida is home to the largest number of freshwater springs on the planet, with more than 700. The springs offer Floridians and visitors the chance to explore, enjoy, share, and conserve beautiful ecological features not found in many places around the world.

This blog is about my visits to the first magnitude springs if Florida. Narrowing down the quest from 700 to 22 makes the journey possible, yet still challenging and fulfilling. The blog will offer a bit of intriguing information mixed with entertaining prose, and a few photographs to shed light on the beauty of Florida’s natural places. Please read along and comment if you would like to add anything, ask a question, or collaborate (would love to feature other people’s photos!).

Thank you for reading and enjoy!
